Rick Harty, Vice President and Representative of the Growers of Mitchell County
Since relocating to the mountains of North Carolina eleven years ago and establishing the Harty Farm, Rick has immersed himself in the farming community and the local food movements. He’s been involved in developing markets for the area farmers through the creation of a small animal processing plant, the development of a mushroom cooperative, the enhancement of Mitchell County Farmers’ Markets, and assisting local beekeepers production of honey. He sees TRACTOR’s growth “as an immediate need to assist area farmers, by opening up markets previously not available…and (he’s) proud to be a part of its future.”
Tres Magner, Secretary and Representative of the Yancey County Cooperative Extension
Tres is the director of the Yancey County Cooperative Extension and has worked with Extension for 12 years. He has 23 years of nonprofit work experience he has leveraged to successfully write and manage over $500,000 in grants over his Extension career. He also actively coordinates with TRACTOR’s many stakeholders and partnerships.
Jeff Vance, Treasurer and Representative of the Mitchel County Cooperative Extension
Jeff serves as the County Extension Director for the Mitchell County Extension Center. Jeff has worked for the N.C. Cooperative Extension Service for twenty two years, all in Mitchell County. He began his career as an Agriculture Extension Agent in 1992 with responsibilities for horticulture, forestry and pesticide education. In 2004 he moved into the position of County Extension Director. Jeff has a B.S. in ornamental horticulture and a Masters of Agriculture and Extension Education both from N.C. State University.
Brandon Birchfield, Representative of the Mitchell County Growers
Brandon is both the principal of Harris Middle School in Spruce Pine and a farmer. In the past, he’s farmed cows and tobacco, but he now grows mostly potatoes. He’s a Mitchell county native and his family has been in the area for generations.
Dr. John Boyd, Representative of Maryland Community College
Dr. John Boyd has lived in Spruce Pine, NC for 4.5 years. While his primary occupation is President of Mayland Community College he also serves on several other local and state Boards and Commissions. Dr. Boyd has served with TRACTOR since it began as part of his role at Mayland Community College.
Harold Davis, Representative of the Growers of Yancey County
Jim Edwards, Representative At Large
Jim grew up on a farm in Yancey County. After getting a BA in business from Mars Hill, he returned to Yancey County. He now works as both a farmer and a probation officer. Like many farmers in the area he is a former tobacco grower who now grows produce including peppers, potatoes, pumpkins, corn, and beans.

Nycole Howard, Representative At Large
Nycole works as an attorney in Burnsville. Having grown up in the area, she knows that farming has played and continues to play an incredibly important role in making the community what it is. When she became involved with TRACTOR, she thought it was an exciting way to support the community through creating market opportunities for our farmers.
Jim Parlier, Representative At Large
Jim has been a Farm Bureau Insurance agent for 34 years and has served in an advisory role with the NC State University Extension service for over 20 years. He was born in Raleigh, and he and his wife Joan have been residents of Yancey County since 1986.
Wanda Proffitt, Representative of the Yancey County Economic Development Corporation
Wanda Proffitt, Director Yancey County Economic Development Commission since 2011, has been a volunteer with economic development since 1980. Active in real estate sales and consulting, she is owner of Carolina Mountain Realty, Inc. with her family. She is married to Bob, has two children, Robert Proffitt and Amy Troutman and 3 grandchildren.
